One of Melbourne's busiest freeways has been closed following a truck collision.

Police say a semi-trailer struck a pylon on the Monash Freeway around midnight, scattering debris across the road.

The driver was uninjured in the collision, but the crash has impacted a bridge support and engineering work is now underway to confirm there's no structural damage.

A VicRoads spokeswoman says the freeway has been closed to all traffic and will remain closed between Blackburn Road at Glen Waverley and Springvale Road at Mulgrave until this afternoon - though an exact time hasn't been determined.

All outbound traffic is being diverted at Blackburn Road, while all city-bound traffic is being diverted off at Springvale Road.

Police and WorkSafe investigators remain at the scene while a massive clean up continues.
