A truck driver is believed to have run a red light before he fatally struck a woman in Sydney's south.

Police say 26-year-old Danielle McGrath was crossing The Kingsway near Port Hacking Road in Caringbah when she was hit by the prime mover about 7.40am on Tuesday.

The Illawong driver, 59, was taken to Sutherland Hospital for mandatory testing and later charged with dangerous driving occasioning death.

However, there have been media reports suggesting Ms McGrath was crossing at a green pedestrian signal when she was hit by the truck driver after he ran a red light.

The Kingsway was closed for three hours after the accident while police investigated the scene.

The driver was granted bail to face Sutherland Court on December 8.

A man also died on Tuesday morning after he crashed his car into a tree during a police chase in Narromine, west of Dubbo.

Police say the wrecked car was found off the side of the road shortly after a patrol car began to follow it.

The man is still to be identified.
