Politicians break their promises all the time - but incoming US president Donald Trump may have upset the boss of the UFC.

US president-elect Donald Trump may have already broken his first election promise.

UFC supremo Dana White says Trump told him earlier in the year that he would attend this weekend's UFC 205 card at Madison Square Garden in New York if he won the election.

But White, who spoke at the Republican National Convention in July to endorse Trump's presidential bid, says he understands his friend might now be a bit busy getting ready to take office.

"Donald originally told me that he would come to the event if he won," said White.

"I don't think Donald really realised what his duties were going to be had he won."

Meanwhile, desperate fans are paying tens of thousands of dollars for tickets to watch Conor McGregor attempt to become the first fighter to hold two UFC belts concurrently when he fights Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title in the card's main event.

Tickets for the first event are on sale via online secondary markets for up to $US19,000 ($A25,162), over 10 times the face value.

White says the event has broken the Garden's previous gate record of $US13.5 million ($A17.9 million), set by the Lennox Lewis-Evander Holyfield heavyweight boxing bout in 1999.
