President-elect Donald Trump has demanded that the cast of Hamilton apologise to Mike Pence after he attended the Broadway show and was booed by the audience.
The vice president-elect was also addressed directly by the cast onstage after the performance at the Richard Rodgers theatre on Friday night.
"Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!," Trump tweeted on Saturday morning.
"The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!"
As Pence found his seat in the theatre, the audience booed loudly, while a few supporters clapped. The show was interrupted several times due to applause and cheering, according to those in the theatre.
Cast-member Brandon Victor Dixon addressed Pence after the performance while the rest of the cast stood in a line behind him holding hands.
"There is nothing to boo here, ladies and gentleman... we are all here sharing a story of love," he said, then to Pence: "Vice President-elect Pence, welcome. Thank you for joining us at Hamilton: An American Musical. We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. We hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of ALL of us."
Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted early on Saturday that he was "proud" of Dixon and the cast, and "proud to remind you that ALL are welcome at the theater."
Dixon responded on Saturday morning to Trump's tweets that Pence was harassed by writing, "conversation is not harassment sir. And I appreciate @mike_pence for stopping to listen."
Pence has a record of strongly opposing gay rights. Hamilton is a show about a Founding Father featuring homosexuals, immigrants, revolutionaries, and people from different ethnic groups.
