Trump, Macron, Turnbull congratulate May

US President Donald Trump, French leader Emmanuel Macron, Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull and New Zealand PM Bill English have all congratulated Theresa May.

Theresa May has received phone calls from the presidents of the US and France and prime ministers of Australia and New Zealand to "congratulate" her on returning to Downing Street.

With the Tories' Commons majority wiped out and May seeking to continue in power heading a minority administration backed by the Democratic Unionist Party, US President Donald Trump has told the PM he looks forward to continued "close co-operation".

Emmanuel Macron has invited her to visit France and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has assured the beleaguered British leader their countries remain as close as ever.

"US President Donald Trump called the prime minister to offer his congratulations. Both sides agreed they look forward to continuing the close co-operation between our two countries," a Downing Street spokesman said on Saturday.

"The French President Emmanuel Macron called to congratulate the prime minister and said he was pleased that she would continue to be a close partner.

"The president invited the prime minister to visit France at the earliest possible opportunity and they agreed that the strong friendship between our two countries was important and would endure."

May also took calls of congratulation from Turnbull and New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English.

Turnbull is a close international ally of May and the pair have known each other since their student days at Oxford University.

"They agreed the UK and Australia were close partners and would continue to stand together, particularly in the fight against terrorism which was a shared threat facing us all," Downing Street said.

"The prime minister offered her sincere condolences over the two Australians killed in the London Bridge attack, and over the police injuries sustained in the recent Melbourne attack.

"New Zealand's prime minister Bill English called the Prime Minister to offer his congratulations.

"The prime minister said she was very sorry a New Zealander had been injured in the London Bridge terrorist attack.

"They agreed they looked forward to continuing to work together as close partners."
