President Donald Trump has told reporters he will renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement "at the appropriate time".

Trump's remarks came at the start of a meeting at the White House with about a dozen union leaders, where he pledged to stop trade deals that harmed American workers.

He noted that earlier in the day he signed a memorandum announcing the US's intention to withdraw from the multi-nation trade agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Trump said he wanted future trade deals to be between just two countries.
