A day after criticising US President Barack Obama for putting up roadblocks in the transition process, president-elect Donald Trump now says he's had a "had a very nice conversation" with Obama by phone.

Trump's told reporters at his resort in Florida that Obama called him from Hawaii on Wednesday, adding: "We had a general conversation - very, very nice. Appreciated it."

Trump went on to say he thinks the transition is going "very, very smoothly. Very good."

Earlier, Trump said on Twitter that the transition had hit some hurdles due to Obama saying he thinks he could have defeated the Republican if he had been able to run for a third term in office.

"Doing my best to disregard the many inflammatory President O statements and roadblocks," Trump said earlier on Twitter. "Thought it was going to be a smooth transition - NOT!"
