Trump reaffirms Mexico will pay for wall

Donald Trump says his idea of the proposed border wall with Mexico "has never changed".

US President Donald Trump has defended his proposed wall along the US southern border, saying his position "has never changed or evolved," and that Mexico would pay for the barrier "directly, or indirectly."

"The Wall is the Wall, it has never changed or evolved from the first day I conceived of it," Trump wrote in a pair of early morning tweets.

"The $US20 billion dollar Wall is 'peanuts' compared to what Mexico makes from the US NAFTA is a bad joke!"

Earlier Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly told Fox News the president's views on the Mexico border wall had evolved.

Kelly said the administration was looking at creating a wall across 1,300km of the 3,100km stretch. He said this would include improving existing fences.

He said the estimated cost was $US20 billion; Mr Trump had originally put the figure at $US10-$US12 billion.
