The US president and the Australian golf great have been friends on and of the course for decades and on Thursday they showered praise on each other.

Norman also took aim at former president Barack Obama and other past US administrations, something the president appreciated.

"Just watched @SharkGregNorman on @foxandfriends," Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.

"Said 'President is doing a great job. All over the world, people want to come back to the US'.

"Thank you Greg, and you're looking and doing great!"

Mr Trump's tweet about Norman came amid a morning firestorm of other tweets from the president who also used the social networking service to attack the FBI, Special Counsel Bob Mueller and rival Democrats.

Norman was a guest on the Fox News US cable TV morning news show Fox & Friends, one of the president's favourite programs.

Norman was promoting his naked photo shoot for ESPN magazine's 2018 Body Issue, where elite sports stars posed naked.

"Why are we blocking half the photograph for?" Norman joked with the show's hosts when they strategically placed large black boxes over the genital area of the muscular 63-year-old's photos.

Fox & Friends is popular with conservative, Republican Party voting Americans, but Norman and his hosts had fun with the provocative photos that involved the "pure naked" golfer on the course and holding a toy shark.

"The most interesting part was when they asked me to do a full swing," Norman, who works out two hours a day, five days a week, said.

Norman, who has also built a global business empire, said Mr Trump has sparked a world economic upturn.

"All I can tell you, when I travel the world to Vietnam, the Middle East, Australia, even to central America and places like that people say 'Welcome back America'," Norman said.

"I used to go there in the previous administrations and everyone would say, 'What is wrong with America?'

"So we are seeing a big difference from what I see from a global economic upturn."

Asked if the upturn was generated by Trump, Norman replied: "I would say so because he has removed so many legislative red tape shackles that were put on this country and now we are starting to see money flow again back into this country."

Norman did say he was worried about trade, with Mr Trump, US allies and China introducing and threatening more tariffs.

"I am," Norman, asked if he was worried, said.

"I think he (Trump) is on the right path quite honestly.

"America, from what I have seen, heard and read and what you guys report on all of the time, I think it should be reciprocal trade.

"Why not?

"When you go to a business meeting, like where I'm going right from here, when you get up from the table everybody has to feel like they got up from the table equal.

"I think he is doing a great job."
