Following his inauguration, Donald Trump has taken over the President of the United States (POTUS) Twitter account.

The @POTUS Twitter account returned initially to zero followers when the switchover took place and had no tweets on its timeline.

In a statement, the social network said the account, along with the @FLOTUS - representing new First Lady Melania Trump - and @WhiteHouse accounts would eventually retain their previous follower counts.

The President's profile description reads: "45th President of the United States.

"Working on behalf of the American people to make our country great again."

The handover was marked by a new profile photo of Trump, alongside a header photo of United States flags.

After some on Twitter pointed out that the banner photo appeared to be taken from an image of Barack Obama's second inauguration, the picture was then changed to a generic American flag.

All tweets sent by the former US President and First Lady have moved to the newly created handles @POTUS44 and @FLOTUS44.

The new accounts will be maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), who will preserve all material from Obama's presidency.

The Obamas can still be followed on their personal handles @BarackObama and @MichelleObama.

The Facebook and Instagram accounts once used by Obama and his team will now be used by the new White House.

An archive of White House content posted during Obama's eight years, including on Medium, Tumblr, and YouTube, will continue to be accessible to the public on Obama White House channels.

Meanwhile, all content from the official White House Website, WhiteHouse.gov, has also been moved to ObamaWhiteHouse.gov.

Meanwhile, Former president Barack Obama greeted Twitter followers from his personal handle on the social media platform.

"Hi everybody! Back to the original handle. Is this thing still on?" Obama joked in a tweet sent about four hours after leaving office. "Michelle and I are off on a quick vacation, then we'll get back to work."

Obama said he wanted to hear what people were thinking about "the road ahead" and asks them to share their ideas at @BarackObama.

He also welcomed his Twitter followers to the Obama Foundation, saying: "I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to create change - but in yours."
