Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is threatening to sue The New York Times for its "really disgusting" behaviour but is declining to provide details about his latest dispute with the press.

"My lawyers want to sue the failing @nytimes so badly for irresponsible intent. I said no (for now), but they are watching. Really disgusting," Trump said in a Twitter post on Saturday night.

The New York real estate developer did not say why he was upset with the paper but he has accused it on numerous occasions of favouring Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

On Saturday, Trump posted several tweets ripping Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who has criticised the businessman and just published a book about the 2016 presidential election titled The Year of Voting Dangerously.

"I told him that it was wrong that there was violence being incited at his rallies and that reporters were getting roughed up," Dowd told CNN on Saturday.

Trump responded to Dowd's comments with several Twitter posts.

"Crazy Maureen Dowd, the wacky columnist for the failing @nytimes, pretends she knows me well--wrong!" Trump tweeted.

"Wacky @NYTimesDowd, who hardly knows me, makes up things that I never said for her boring interviews and column. A neurotic dope!" Trump said in another post.

The Republican presidential candidate has feuded with The Times and other media outlets during the campaign.

The Trump campaign created a "black list" of media outlets that were barred from covering the candidate's events or were prevented from covering him to the extent possible.

The list, which was eliminated this month, included The Washington Post, the Spanish-language Univision network, Politico and online news sites Buzzfeed and the Huffington Post, among others.
