US president-elect Donald Trump is to nominate former Texas governor Rick Perry as US energy secretary, a department he had previously campaigned to eliminate, according to local media.
Broadcasters CBS and NBC reported, citing sources close to Trump, that Perry is set to head the Energy Department, a government agency whose name he once infamously forgot during a 2011 presidential primary debate.
The president-elect had met with Perry on Tuesday in Trump Tower in New York.
The 66-year-old Republican, who campaigned in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections, is often remembered for saying "oops" after failing to remember the name of the Energy Department, alongside two other government agencies he had pledged to eliminate as president.
Perry became governor of Texas in 2000, when his predecessor George W Bush became president, and continued in the role until early last year.
When pulling out of the 2016 presidential race, Perry had initially endorsed Trump rival Ted Cruz, slamming Trump as a "cancer on conservatism." He later offered his support to Trump, calling him "the people's choice."
