Trump, Turnbull to discuss North Korea

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will receive a briefing about the NYPD-FBI joint terrorism task force during his trip to New York.

North Korea will be at the top of the agenda when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York.

Mr Turnbull is also expected to discuss the rogue North Korean regime led by Kim Jong Un and other Asia-Pacific security issues during a Manhattan meeting with Admiral Harry Harris, the commander of US Pacific Command.

It will be a whirlwind trip this week for the prime minister, who will likely spend less than 48 hours in New York before heading back to Canberra for next week's budget.

On Thursday, Mr Turnbull is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Mr Trump, meet Admiral Harris, receive a briefing on the NYPD-FBI joint terrorism task force and hold an energy policy working lunch.

Mr Turnbull and Mr Trump will end Thursday night on the decommissioned USS Intrepid aircraft carrier at an American Australian Association event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the US-Australian Battle of the Coral Sea victory over Japan.

"That's the first time Australian and American naval forces went into action together ... and we succeeded in turning back a Japanese invasion force headed for Port Moresby," Mr Turnbull told 3AW.

He said had the Japanese taken the Papua New Guinea capital, the whole of eastern Australia would have been exposed and at the whim of invaders.

"It was a really critical turning point in the war," he said.

The prime minister will attend a chief executive roundtable meeting on Friday.
