Nationals leader and incoming deputy prime minister Warren Truss believes his party's strong performance in the federal election may give it more portfolios in the new government.
Mr Truss will meet with prime minister-elect Tony Abbott in Canberra on Monday to discuss the formation of the new coalition government.
"Under the coalition arrangements the positions are divided according to the number of seats we have in the coalition room from each party," he told Sky News.
"We have done reasonably well in the election.
"We will have at least 20 people in the Nationals party room. That's a step up from the past."

It's still not clear if the Nationals will pick up the trade portfolio, as they have done in previous coalition governments.
Mr Truss is likely to become infrastructure and transport minister.
Mr Abbott's new ministry is expected to be sworn in next week.
Meanwhile, Mr Truss also called on the Senate not to stand between the government and its plan to abolish Labor's carbon tax.
"We would hope the incoming Senate, and indeed the senators who are currently still in office would respect the mandate given to the Liberal and National parties to deliver its policies," he said.
"The key policy is clearly to get rid of the carbon tax."
