Trust would pay for new stadium: NSW Labor

NSW Labor could force the SCG Trust to repay a loan of about $650 million for the upgrade of the Sydney Football Stadium if elected.

The SCG Trust could be forced to pay back a loan for the entire cost of rebuilding the Sydney Football Stadium if it's demolished and Labor wins the NSW state election.

Labor has confirmed if the demolition and subsequent rebuild of the stadium goes ahead it will make the trust take out an estimated $644 million concessional loan to pay for the new facility.

"Labor will not leave a hole in the ground but nor will it saddle the public with the cost of knocking down and rebuilding stadium," opposition leader Michael Daley told AAP in a statement on Friday.

"Our preference is for the stadium to remain standing but if the Liberals ignore public opinion and proceed with the demolition then we must budget for a loan to the Trust."

The government's plan to demolish the stadium before the March 23 election has been delayed by a court challenge from a local community group and Waverley Council who argue the planning process is flawed.

An injunction was placed on any hard demolition of the stadium until March 8 while the Land and Environment Court considers the legal challenge.

Opponents argue the government didn't exhibit the demolition proposal for the required period of time and failed to consider design excellence.
