Kevin Rudd has been challenged by a truck driver to see for himself the 'goat track' that is the Pacific Highway.
Sydney truck driver Stephen Foster on Friday offered the prime minister a seat in the cabin of his semi-trailer on one of his regular runs between Brisbane and Sydney.
"So you can see how bad it is for yourself," he told Mr Rudd during the Seven Network's Sunrise program.
Mr Foster wanted to know when the highway, one of the busiest in Australia, would become a divided dual carriageway.
"At this stage, it's a goat track, not all of it, but a helluva lot of it is a goat track."
Mr Rudd acknowledged there were huge gaps in it "in terms of what's needed for a modern road system for the 21st century".
"We have set a timeline for finishing the final duplication of the road, so it's safer on the way through for truckers like yourself," he said, admitting that he did not know what deadline the government had set itself.
"Our attitude is: put out a realistic timetable and do it block by block."
Mr Rudd left open the possibility of a ride in Mr Foster's truck.
