Tsunami warning issued after El Salvador quake

A major earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude has struck off thecoast of El Salvador in Central America, according to the US Geological Survey.

A major earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude has struck off the coast of El Salvador in Central America, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck at a depth of 53 kilometres and more than 110 kilometres from the nearest coastline.

A tsunami warning is in effect for Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported on its website.

“This earthquake appears to be a slow earthquake with additional tsunami potential. Therefore a warning is being issued.”

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.
