Turkey and Russia 'want Syria ceasefire'

Turkey and Russia may support opposing sides in the years-long conflict in Syria, but Ankara's foreign minister says they both want a ceasefire.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu says his country and Russia want a ceasefire in Syria, where the two nations support opposing camps in the conflict.

Speaking alongside his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Thursday, Cavusloglu said "we are in agreement that a ceasefire is needed so that the tragedy can come to an end".

Ankara and Moscow have long been at odds over the conflict in Syria, where Russia backs President Bashar Assad and Turkey supports rebel factions fighting to topple the Syrian leader.

The conflict has played out tragically in the divided city of Aleppo, where tens of thousands, mostly women and children, have been displaced from their homes in rebel areas since Saturday.

In reference to eastern Aleppo, Lavrov said his country would continue its support to the Syrian government until "Aleppo is cleared of terrorists".

His comments come after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly discussed the situation in Aleppo with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, by phone for the third time in a week.

The sources said the two leaders agreed on Wednesday to intensify efforts towards ending hostilities and on the need for the provision of aid to the city.

Syrian rebels on Wednesday vowed to fight on in east Aleppo in the face of sudden government advances that have cut the city's opposition sector by a third and brought the insurgents to the brink of a catastrophic defeat.
