Turkey arrests 100 over coup attempt

Turkish police have conducted an operation in three provinces to arrest 100 people for their alleged connection with the coup attempt in July 2016.

Turkish police have conducted an operation in three provinces to arrest 100 people for their alleged connection with the coup attempt last July.

According to Anadolu news agency, at least 40 people have already been arrested, accused of funding the Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara alleges is behind the coup.

Turkish authorities claim Gulen planned the failed coup and have demanded the United States extradite him to Turkey.

Since the coup attempt, more than 40,000 people have been detained for allegedly taking part, according to Amnesty International.

More than 130,000 state officials, including soldiers, police officers, judges, teachers and academics, have been suspended or dismissed for their alleged links with the Gulen movement.
