Malcolm Turnbull has arrived in New Zealand on his first official trip overseas as Prime Minister.

He travelled across the Tasman on Friday afternoon with his wife Lucy and was scheduled to have a private dinner with his counterpart, John Key, and his wife Bronagh.

The two prime ministers will hold a meeting on Saturday in Auckland to discuss security, trade, welfare, investment and immigration issues.

High on the agenda is likely to be the intention to deport Kiwis found guilty of crimes in Australia.

Mr Turnbull is also expected to meet Opposition Leader Andrew Little.
