The Turnbull government has confirmed it's axing Tony Abbott's Green Army.

The program was terminated in Monday's mid-year budget update to save $224.7 million over four years, although existing contracts will continue to be funded.

The savings will help pay for a $100 million investment in Landcare, as part of an agreement struck with the Greens to win its vote for the controversial backpacker tax.
