Malcolm Turnbull says he remains a committed republican but it's not a priority issue for his government.

The prime minister was one of the key figures behind the previous failed campaign to make Australia a republic.

"I remain a very strong and committed republican and I always will be ... (but) it's not the front and centre issue of today," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.
