Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been receiving regular updates on an explosion in New York City during his visit to the Big Apple.

Police are investigating the dumpster blast in the fashionable downtown Manhattan neighbourhood of Chelsea, which has injured 29 people.

Mr Turnbull is in New York ahead of the United Nations General Assembly and visited the 9/11 memorial after flying in on Saturday (local time).
