Turnbull clarifies capital gains tax talk

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has attempted to clarify the government's standing on capital gains tax during parliamentary question time.

The coalition will not be adopting Labor's plan to reduce the capital gains tax discount for individuals, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has told parliament.

Mr Turnbull a day earlier had emphatically ruled out increasing the tax, saying it was "no part of our thinking whatsoever".

But reports the very next day suggested the government was considering halving the CGT discount for superannuation funds.

Labor has proposed reducing the capital gains tax discount from 50 per cent to 25 per cent.

Mr Turnbull described Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's persistent questioning on the issue as "childish".

"It shows the sad and childish desperation to which the opposition have sunk," he said.
