Malcolm Turnbull has nimbly avoided entering the fray of the US presidential race.
The prime minister, taking questions at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, was asked what he thought about the election and, in terms of a leader, who could Australia work with in 2017.
"I'm sure that we will work with whoever the American people in their wisdom choose," Mr Turnbull said.
The question was prompted by Mr Turnbull's observation that Australians were keenly interested in US politics.
"I'm sure you are entertained," the questioner said, alluding to controversial businessman Donald Trump's high standing in the Republican presidential candidate contest.
Mr Turnbull said the presidential race had Australia's attention.
"While we make no judgments on the partisan outcome, we hope that the strong bipartisan commitment to our alliance, to our region, and to the maintenance of a secure international order, will continue undiminished," he said.
