Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has not maintained his predecessor's practice of meeting regularly with Liberal MPs charing backbench committees.

Tony Abbott agreed to hold bi-monthly meetings as he faced a threat to his leadership early in 2015.

But an official from the prime minister's department told a Senate estimates hearing on Monday, there had been no meetings since Mr Turnbull became prime minister six months ago.
