Malcolm Turnbull has made a sick young man's day, giving him the VIP treatment at Parliament House in Canberra.

The prime minister posted photos on his Facebook page of him spending Sunday showing Declan around the house of power as part of a Make A Wish experience.

"Declan hasn't been well lately but today found out what it was like to sit in the prime minister's chair and visited the cabinet room before exploring the rest of Parliament House," Mr Turnbull wrote.

The pair is also pictured in the cabinet room with Mr Turnbull pointing at the roof, possibly showing the "bugs" that are permanently in the secure chamber - a joke by the artist who designed the ceiling's decorative inlays to show native flora hiding moths and beetles.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was impressed, writing on the post: "What a great thing to do. Declan looks right at home."
