Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is jetting off to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the biennial get-together of former territories of the British empire.

This year's event will be held in Malta over the weekend and could well be the last to be attended by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

Coming just before the major climate change conference in Paris, the 21st Conference of the Parties, CHOGM will also discuss climate change as well as the threat posed by terrorism and violent extremism.

There's been speculation that former coalition government foreign minister Alexander Downer could become the next Commonwealth secretary-general.

While Mr Turnbull is overseas, deputy Warren Truss will be acting prime minister.
