Malcolm Turnbull will visit Indonesia and Germany next week on his first major overseas trip as prime minister.

Mr Turnbull will meet with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta on November 12 to discuss trade, investment and security issues.

Australia-Indonesia relations have been bumpy in the wake of the Chan and Sukumaran executions, the suspensions of the live cattle trade, boat turnbacks and the presidential phone tapping scandal.

However, relations are being rebuilt and the elevation of Mr Turnbull to the leadership has been welcomed by Indonesian authorities.

Mr Turnbull will then visit Berlin to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel and receive the recommendations of the Australia-Germany Advisory Group.

On November 15-16 the prime minister will attend the G20 summit in Antalya, Turkey, where leaders including US President Barack Obama will discuss economic and security issues.

In Manila, Mr Turnbull will attend the APEC leaders' meeting and then go on to the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

Mr Turnbull says the global challenge is to create the right environment for innovation, trade and investment to flourish.
