Malcolm Turnbull has personally assured French President Francois Hollande of Australia's support in the fight against terrorism.

The prime minister spoke with President Hollande on Tuesday afternoon in the wake of the terrorist attack in Nice in which 84 people were killed.

"I assured President Hollande that we stand shoulder to shoulder with France in the fight against Islamist terrorism," Mr Turnbull said in a statement on Wednesday.
