Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will make his first official trip to Indonesia next week to meet with President Joko Widodo.
Relations with Australia's northern neighbour have been rocky this year, which has been dominated by diplomatic strife over the execution of Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in April.
Previously suspended ministerial visits resumed in July, which have paved the way for Mr Turnbull's trip.
The two leaders will discuss trade, investment and countering violent extremism.
The elevation of Mr Turnbull to the prime ministership has been welcomed within Indonesian government ranks.
Indonesia's ambassador to Australia Nadjib Riphat Kesoema last month described the relationship as being on an "upward trajectory".
He said Indonesia wanted to work with Australia on building resilience to withstand "short-term shocks".
In recent weeks, Australia has provided Indonesia with two aircraft to deal with the forest fire emergency.
Mr Turnbull will head to Berlin, where he will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, after his brief visit to Jakarta.
He'll then attend his first G20 summit in Antalya, Turkey, before flying to Manila for the APEC leaders' meeting and Kuala Lumpur for the East Asia Summit.
