Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and US President Barack Obama have discussed the global glut in steel production in a phone call.

The two leaders covered a wide-ranging list of defence and economic issues in the call on Wednesday, the White House says.

"The two leaders also discussed the need to work together to address the global glut in steel," the White House said in a statement.
