Turnbull offers US condolences for Harvey

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has reached out to US President Donald Trump, offering condolences over the catastrophic toll of hurricane Harvey in Texas.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has reached out to US President Donald Trump to offer condolences and assistance as the the country deals with the devastating floods in Texas and Louisiana.

The tropical storm that began as category four Hurricane Harvey made landfall for a second time on Wednesday to bring more pelting rain to the region.

At least 22 people have died and Houston, the fourth-largest city in the US, has suffered catastrophic flooding from more than 125cm of rain falling since Friday in some areas.

An Australian government official told AAP on Wednesday Mr Turnbull has been directly in touch with the White House to offer condolences and assistance.

Houston, dubbed the world's energy capital, is home to a large population of Australians.

Australia's leading resources companies, including BHP Billiton, Brambles, Lend Lease, Santos and Woodside, have offices in Houston.

The US National Weather Service warned on Wednesday "catastrophic and life-threatening flooding will continue in and around Houston eastward into southwest Louisiana for the rest of the week".

Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed 24,000 National Guard troops will be deployed in his state.
