Turnbull rejects citizenship referendum

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the High Court has made it clear that hopeful MPs need to renounce any other citizenship in order to run for parliament.

Malcolm Turnbull doesn't believe a referendum is needed to amend a part of the constitution banning people with dual-citizenship running for federal parliament.

The crisis over Section 44 has already claimed more than a dozen scalps, with three Labor MPs and Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie announcing on Wednesday they would quit following a High Court verdict over ACT senator Katy Gallagher.

Asked whether the latest drama warrants a referendum change, the prime minister told reporters in Queanbeyan on Thursday: "It's time for people to ensure that they're not dual citizens before they nominate for parliament".

Mr Turnbull said it is not hard to renounce UK citizenship and candidates from all parties should get their act together before they nominate "full stop".
