Malcolm Turnbull has offered his condolences to the father of Justine Damond, the Australian woman shot dead by a US police officer.

As answers are sought from local authorities in Minneapolis, the prime minister again described Ms Damond's death as inexplicable.

"I spoke to Justine's dad yesterday about it and gave him our love and sympathy," he told Neil Mitchell on 3AW radio on Thursday.
