Malcolm Turnbull may not have done well at the election, but he's still ahead of Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister and way ahead of Tony Abbott as preferred Liberal leader.

A new poll by Roy Morgan shows 51 per cent of electors prefer him as prime minister, against 47 per cent for Bill Shorten.

That's a six percentage point fall for Mr Turnbull in a month and a 23 point increase for Mr Shorten.

The snap SMS Morgan Poll was conducted on Tuesday, with 3587 electors asked who they preferred as PM, Liberal leader and opposition leader.

Some conservative commentators have called for Mr Abbott to return, but the Morgan poll shows he remains unpopular with just 25 per cent support, against 71 per cent for Mr Turnbull.

Sixty per cent of those who identified as coalition supporters preferred Mr Turnbull as Liberal leader while 38 per cent preferred Mr Abbott.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese has rejected any plan to challenge Mr Shorten, but the poll gives him a slight lead as preferred opposition leader - 49 per cent to 48 per cent.

But when only Labor supporters are asked, Mr Shorten is the clear favourite, with 64 per cent support and 35 per cent for Mr Albanese.

Pollster Gary Morgan said Mr Shorten was widely considered to have run a successful election campaign.

But electors were almost evenly split between him and Mr Albanese.

"The good news for Shorten is that ALP supporters clearly prefer Shorten to continue as ALP leader," he said in a statement.
