Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has thanked Philippines leader Benigno Aquino for advice on countering terrorism.

The two leaders held formal talks on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Manila on Wednesday.

"Your views on de-radicalisation were particularly informative and very helpful to us as we consider our response in Australia," Mr Turnbull told reporters.
