Turnbull tension in coalition: Albo

Malcolm Turnbull's popularity has triggered internal leadership tensions within the opposition, the deputy prime minister says.

Leadership tensions within the coalition will grow as new polling shows they would win an election with Malcolm Turnbull as leader, Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says.

The coalition would flatten Labor at the upcoming federal election with Mr Turnbull at the helm, according to a Network Seven poll released on Friday.

With Turnbull in charge the coalition lead Labor 58-42 per cent on a two party preferred basis, the survey suggests.

With Mr Abbott in charge, the coalition leads 51-49 per cent.

Responding to the poll on Friday, Mr Albanese said Mr Turnbull's popularity had sparked leadership issues in the opposition.

"I think Malcolm Turnbull's out there raising these issues. He said the other day that he was more popular than Tony Abbott," Mr Albanese told reporters.

"There's no doubt that internal tensions within the coalition are there. I expect they will grow in coming days and weeks."

The survey also suggests Mr Turnbull is more popular than Kevin Rudd, leading 65-35 in the preferred prime minister stakes.
