Australia will have to wait until February to see if Malcolm Turnbull gave $1 million to the Liberal election campaign.

The prime minister refused to reveal if he had made the donation reported in media, saying only that everything would be disclosed in line with the law.

"There is a very precise disclosure regime, as you know, for political donations, and donations to the Liberal Party and other parties are always disclosed in accordance with the Electoral Act," he told reporters on Sunday.

Details of donations made to political parties are published in February after the financial year in which they were given.

That means Mr Turnbull's possible donation won't be revealed for another six and a half months.

Donations made to individual candidates during an election campaign are published 24 weeks after polling day - in this case, the week before Christmas.

Deputy Liberal leader Julie Bishop said if Mr Turnbull did give money to the campaign, it wouldn't surprise her because he had made donations in the past.

"Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull are some of the most generous benefactors that I know," she told ABC TV on Sunday.

"If the prime minister wishes to donate to the Liberal Party, I'm sure the Liberal Party will be delighted to receive it."

She denied the party's "coffers were or are bare".
