Energy, education and trade will be on the agenda for Malcolm Turnbull's first visit as prime minister to India.

Mr Turnbull heads to Papua New Guinea on Friday afternoon before making his way to the subcontinent.

He told the Sydney Institute on Thursday night the Indian economy was growing at more than seven per cent a year and could be as large as that of the United States by 2050.

"My first visit to India as prime minister is a chance to further co-operate across a wide range of sectors including energy, education and trade," Mr Turnbull said.

Australia is well placed to provide resources such as uranium, coal, gas and renewable energy technology to India as it modernises.
The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will meet with Mr Turnbull, is also aiming to train 400 million people by 2022.

"We can help them achieve this goal, both here and in India," Mr Turnbull said.

Education is already Australia's second-largest export to India worth $2.3 billion in 2015/16.

And India represents the second-highest source of international students to Australia, with more than 60,000 in 2016.

India has designated Mr Turnbull's trip an official state visit, so his time in New Delhi will also be marked with a ceremonial welcome at the presidential palace, a wreath laying at Gandhi's memorial and a state banquet.

The prime minister's focus in Mumbai will be on furthering business links between the two countries and he is expected to meet several large companies, possibly including Adani, which is in the process of seeking approvals for a large coal mine in Queensland.
