Malcolm Turnbull will visit India in 2017 as talks on a free trade agreement make slow progress.

The prime minister met with Indian leader Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou on Sunday.

Mr Modi, who agreed in the 45-minute meeting more needed to be done to move the trade talks along, invited Mr Turnbull to India.
