Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is calling on Muslim leaders to speak up against violent extremism.

Mr Turnbull says while community leaders like Jamal Rifi have been vocal in condemning the Parramatta shooting which claimed the life of a NSW police worker, others should too.

"Yes they should speak up, but it's more important from a practical point of view that there is leadership in the Muslim community which continues to demonstrate that this type of violent extremism is not consistent with Islam," he told Melbourne radio 3AW.

Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs Concetta Fierravanti-Wells said the Muslim community was not homogenous and different leaders dealt with such issues differently.

She welcomed Dr Rifi's comments that the issue must be dealt with from within Muslim communities.

"It is not just about dialogue ... also owning not just the problem but owning how we are going to work together to resolve this insidious attack on our young people," she told reporters in Canberra.
