Malcolm Turnbull won't be making any last-minute dash to Western Australia to campaign for Saturday's by-election in Canning.

The newly installed prime minister says there's a huge amount of work to do putting together his new ministry.

"My expectation is that I will be in Canberra or in Sydney between now and Monday," he told reporters on Wednesday.
