TV star Hughes expedites sex assault trial

Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes will waive his right to a committal hearing and go straight to trial over sexual assault allegations.

Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes is set to go straight to trial over allegations he sexually assaulted five girls.

Hughes' lawyer Greg Walsh foreshadowed outside Sydney's District Court on Tuesday that the 64-year-old would be waiving his right to committal when his matter returned to court next week.

"That's being done so as we an expedite the matter. He wants to try and bring it to a head as quickly as possible," he told reporters.

Hughes is facing 11 charges relating to the sexual and indecent assault of five girls between 1984 and 1990 in Sydney's northern suburbs.

Two of the five alleged victims have given a series of print and television interviews accusing Hughes of assaulting them when they were children.

The accusations preceded his arrest in London last year and his subsequent return to Australia where he was charged.

When Hughes's matter came before the court earlier this month, Mr Walsh said subpoenas had been issued to the media organisations for access to the interviews and all material and communications related to them.

Mr Walsh told reporters that a lot of the material about the interviews, including emails leading up to the recording of the allegations and information about how the interviews came about, had been produced.

However, further material, including subpoenaed documents from a psychologist, is being sought.

Hughes - who was said to be "nearby" - didn't appear in court for Tuesday's mention but an application was made to change his address on his bail.

Hughes played the lead role of Martin Kelly in Hey Dad!, which ran from 1987 to 1994.

His matter will return to the same court next week.
