South Africa is counting down to a big anniversary, 20 years since the first democratic elections.

So, how is it doing on key factors such as security, violence and civil rights?

Well, good and bad, as one prominent jurist puts it.

Edwin Cameron, a judge on the Constitutional Court, first rose to prominence as a Rhodes Scholar, law professor and human rights lawyer.

He's also openly gay.
