Fortescue Metals boss Andrew Forrest is stepping back from the day-to-day running of the iron ore miner.

He'll retire as chief executive and become chairman at the next board meeting in August.

Chief operating officer Nev Power will become CEO, and current chairman Herb Elliot will step aside to become deputy non-executive chairman and lead independent director.
