Twin motivations for NBL's NZ Breakers

New Zealand Breakers will lift for forward Mika Vukona and former guard CJ Bruton when they host Adelaide in the NBL on Friday.

An honour for CJ Bruton and a milestone for Mika Vukona provide sources of motivation for the New Zealand Breakers in their first home game of the NBL season.

Guard Bruton will have his jersey retired before Friday's tip-off against the Adelaide 36ers, honouring his six seasons at the club which included three titles before he stood aside earlier this year.

Veteran forward Vukona will play his 130th successive game for the club, matching the record for most games in a row set by foundation Breakers Paul Henare and Aaron Olsen.

The Breakers will seek to build on the feelgood factor from their opening 80-70 upset of the defending champion Wildcats in Perth last week.

Questions hang over the fitness of three key players.

Guard Corey Webster played just 11 minutes before suffering a back injury in Perth. He trained earlier in the week and is likely to start.

Forward Thomas Abercrombie missed the opener after undergoing a hernia operation and is regarded as a good chance to play although may be given limited minutes by coach Dean Vickerman.

Centre Alex Pledger is also set to be used sparingly for a second week due to a painful toe injury which threatens to bother him throughout the season.

Adelaide opened their campaign last week with a loss at home to Cairns followed by a win away to Townsville.
