Two men have been arrested after another man was killed in a "callous and vicious" attack with a bottle in Sydney's southwest.

A 24-year-old man handed himself to police at Campsie on Sunday afternoon, while a 48-year-old man, arrested in raids on three properties, remains in custody.

It's believed the 45-year-old victim was chatting with his partially-deaf father when he was stabbed in the neck with a bottle outside his unit block in Lakemba in the early hours of Sunday.

His mother had gone inside to use the toilet as they returned from a night out.

The men were confronted by a third man for talking too loudly and apparently agreed to quieten down, police said.

But seconds later, the 45-year-old was "callously and viciously" assaulted in an unprovoked attack, Superintendent Michael McLean told reporters.

He was found bleeding from the neck and died at the scene.

"A man, relatively defenceless, has lost his life," Supt McLean said.

The 24-year-old is being interviewed by police.

"We are treating this death as a homicide," Supt McLean said.

He stressed the investigation was in its early stages.

Police don't think the victim knew his attacker or that any racial element or drugs were involved.
