Two 11-year-old boys have drowned at a popular Adelaide beach on New Year's Day.

The two friends, both from Adelaide's northern suburbs, were pulled unresponsive from water near the Glenelg jetty after 6pm.

Ambulance crews tried to revive them, but one of the boys died at the scene.

The second boy was taken to the Women's and Children's Hospital in a critical condition, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Three other children were pulled from the water shortly before the boys were found.

Police are investigating.
