Brazil's acting President Michel Temer says the opening ceremonies of the Rio Olympic Games could be awkward if both he and the suspended president he replaced are on hand.

Both Temer and suspended president Dilma Rousseff have been invited by Rio 2016's organising committee to attend the event at Maracana stadium.

Rousseff was impeached and suspended in May from office for allegedly breaking fiscal laws. A Senate trial will decide her fate.

In a Tuesday night interview on channel GloboNews, Temer said it would be better if Rousseff's impeachment trial finished before the August 5-21 games.

That isn't likely, however. The most optimistic predictions of senators have the final vote happening around mid-August, which could very well get pushed back until after the games.
